What to Expect on New Shutter Fitting Day
This guide covers fitting day for new made-to-measure shutters supplied by Shutters Design: preparation, installation checks, timing and sign-off.

How to prepare when we fit your new shutters
Clear the windowsill and give the installer clear access to each window. Move fragile items and furniture that blocks the panel swing or working area.
If curtains, blinds or other window coverings need removing, agree who will remove them before fitting day. Keep pets and children away from the immediate working area while tools are in use.
How we fit and test new shutters we supplied
The installer checks the manufactured frame against the opening before fixing it. They then hang the panels and adjust the alignment, catches and louvre operation.
Each panel should open and close without catching the frame or nearby handles. The louvres should move together and hold their position across the panel.
What decides how long shutter fitting takes
For new shutters supplied by Shutters Design, a straightforward full-height window usually takes 60-90 minutes to fit. A whole room is usually around 2-4 hours, while a whole-house installation across 6-10 windows normally takes one day.
Bays, shaped windows and tracked door systems need more alignment work and can take longer. We confirm the expected appointment length from the final specification.
What to check before sign-off
Open and close each panel. Check that it clears the frame, handles and sill, then test the visible or hidden tilt mechanism.
Ask about anything that looks or feels wrong before the installer leaves. The written specification and aftercare information remain the reference for the finished order.
Can I install plantation shutters myself?
You can take rough measurements to estimate shutter area, but made-to-measure shutters depend on accurate manufacturing measurements, frame position and clearances around handles and opening windows.
We take the final measurements and fit the shutters as part of the order. This avoids committing to a panel layout before the reveal, window operation and fixing position have been checked in person.
Can I open a window with shutters fitted?
Yes, when the shutter frame and panel layout leave enough clearance for the window handles, hinges and opening direction. Some inward-opening windows require the shutter panel to be opened first.
The home survey checks these movements before the shutters are manufactured, so the written specification reflects how the window and shutter need to operate together.

Shutter Installation handles fitting-only work for shutters you already own, including shutters bought elsewhere. See the fitting-only service before arranging the work.
You can take rough measurements for budgeting, but final manufacturing measurements, frame position and operating clearances need to be checked before made-to-measure shutters are ordered. Our measuring guide explains what you can record before the professional survey.
Yes, when the frame and panel layout provide enough clearance for the handles, hinges and opening direction. The home survey checks whether the shutter panel must be opened before an inward-opening window and records the correct arrangement before manufacture.
