Quick answer

For most homeowners who plan to stay put and want adjustable privacy and light, yes. Our fitted shutters cost from £260 per square metre including VAT, survey, supply and fitting, which is more than most blinds. The value comes from using the louvres every day. Shutters are poor value if you are moving soon, only need darkness or have no room for the panels to open.

Key takeaways

  • A 1200mm by 1500mm window comes to about £468 with Plan & Save, including VAT, survey, supply and fitting.
  • You are paying for daily control of privacy and daylight, plus better thermal and noise insulation than blinds or curtains.
  • Choose a blind if you are moving soon, only need a dark room or have no space for the panels to swing open.

Whether shutters are worth it depends less on the price per square metre and more on how often you will use what they do. A street-facing front room you sit in every evening gets value from adjustable louvres every day. A spare-room window you rarely look at may not. This guide sets out the cost, what you get for it, the honest drawbacks and the cases where we would point you to a blind instead.

How much do plantation shutters cost for what you get?

Our Plan & Save rate is £260 per square metre in Hardwood or Polycomposite, including VAT, the home survey, supply and fitting. Express costs £315 per square metre for Polycomposite and £380 for Hardwood, on the same inclusive basis. These are rates for the measured shutter area, so the price follows the size of the window rather than a fixed price per window.

Take a 1200mm by 1500mm sash window. Its area is 1.8 square metres, so full-height shutters cost about £468 with Plan & Save, £567 with Express Polycomposite or £684 with Express Hardwood, all including VAT, survey, supply and fitting. For whole-house totals, our 2, 3 and 4-bed cost guide adds up typical windows room by room.

That price buys a panel made to measure for your window, fitted by us, with Polycomposite carrying a 10-year manufacturer guarantee and Hardwood a 5-year manufacturer guarantee. Our separate, non-transferable 10-year personal guarantee covers faults attributable to our work. Spread across the 10-year Polycomposite guarantee, the £468 window works out at under £50 a year of guaranteed cover. That is the period of cover, not a prediction of how long the shutters will last. The warranty and aftercare terms set out what each guarantee includes.

Prices include VAT, the home survey, supply and fitting, for full-height shutters on an illustrative 1200mm x 1500mm opening. Tier-on-tier adds 10% to the windows that use it. Our separate 10-year personal guarantee applies to every option.

What do shutters give you that most blinds do not?

The main benefit is control without uncovering the window. Tilting the louvres changes the light and the view into the room while the panel stays closed, so you keep daytime privacy without lowering a blind and losing the daylight. Opening the panels gives fuller access to the glass when you want it.

Split control adds a second layer. A full-height panel can have separately tilting upper and lower louvres, so the lower section screens the view from the pavement while the upper section lets light in. Tier-on-tier shutters go further by letting the upper and lower panels open independently, at 10% more than equivalent full height. Our style comparison explains when each is worth choosing.

Our own orders show which features people value most. Full-height shutters are by far our most frequently fitted style, about nine in ten customers choose hidden tilt and around nine in ten choose white. Our guide to our customers' choices explains the reasons behind each.

Shutters are also a fitted part of the window rather than a soft furnishing. Polycomposite is waterproof, so it suits bathrooms and kitchens where fabric would mark or stay damp. Day-to-day care is a soft brush on Hardwood or a gently damp cloth on Polycomposite.

Do shutters help with heat loss, noise or the value of your home?

Yes for heat loss and noise. Closed shutters add a fitted layer between the room and the glass, giving better thermal and noise insulation than blinds or curtains. Resale value is different: we do not quote a set amount that shutters add to the price of a home.

Historic England tested treatments on one traditional single-glazed timber sash window. In its glass-and-frame calculation, closed shutters reduced heat transfer by 58%, a figure that excludes heat lost through air leakage. See the Historic England sash-window research for the method. That is a result for one test window, not a certified figure for our shutters or a guaranteed saving on your bills. Our thermal insulation guide explains the test and which styles cover the glass fully.

Closed shutters also cut outside noise, such as traffic and passers-by. Polycomposite gives better thermal and noise insulation than Hardwood, thanks to the metal insertions inside its louvres and frame. Shutters are not a substitute for acoustic glazing, and we do not quote a tested acoustic rating, so if road noise is severe, check the glass and seals as well.

We have not seen reliable evidence for a fixed amount that shutters add to a sale price, so we do not quote one. Made-to-measure shutters normally stay with the house when you sell, because they are fitted to those windows. Buy them for the years you will use them.

What are the drawbacks of plantation shutters?

The biggest drawback is the upfront cost. A basic off-the-shelf blind costs less than a made-to-measure shutter, and fitting shutters throughout a house is a significant spend. The second is the wait: Express usually takes 2-3 weeks and Plan & Save 8-9 weeks, both from the 50% deposit and order.

Open panels also need space. The BBSA guidance on internal shutters notes that hinged panels protrude into the room when opened. A sofa, bedside table or curtain in the way can stop a panel opening fully, which is why we check furniture and curtains at the survey.

Closed shutters darken a room but are not blackout. Light can pass at the louvre joins and around the panel edges. If you need a dark bedroom, a honeycomb blackout blind can be added behind new shutters. The manual version costs £158 per square metre, including VAT, survey, supply and fitting.

Even fully open louvres still sit across the glass, so for an uninterrupted view you open the panels, whereas a raised blind clears the glass on its own. The tops of the louvres also collect dust and need a quick brush every so often. Because each shutter is made for one window, a later window replacement may mean adjusting or remaking it.

When is a blind the better choice?

A blind is usually better value when you are only staying a short time, when the budget has to stretch across every window at once, or when darkness is the only goal. A shutter is a long-term fitted item, and its value builds over the years you use it. We would point you towards a blind when:

  • You expect to move within a year or two and will not use the louvre control enough to justify the cost.

  • The window belongs to a utility room or spare room where privacy and light control rarely matter.

  • The room needs blackout and nothing else, so a well-fitted blackout blind on its own does the job.

  • There is no room for hinged or folding panels to open past furniture, a radiator or a worktop tap.

Our shutters vs blinds comparison goes through roller, Roman, Venetian and cellular blinds feature by feature.

How can you get the most value from shutters?

Spend where the shutters work hardest and save where they do not. Start with the rooms you use every day and the windows that face the street, then add the other rooms in later stages.

If you can wait, Plan & Save is the lower-cost route to the same specification. Hardwood and Polycomposite cost the same in Plan & Save, so choose the material for the room: Polycomposite for bathrooms and kitchens, either material for dry rooms. Use tier-on-tier only where you need the upper panels to open separately, because a full-height panel with split tilt controls the light and privacy without the 10% premium.

Compare quotations on the same basis. Check whether a cheaper price includes VAT, the survey, fitting and comparable guarantees, and whether the louvre size and frame match. Our pricing guide lists our inclusive rates, and a free home survey gives you a price for your own windows, with no deposit until you confirm.
