One Fitter. Every Job. Five Years of Free Aftercare. Here Is What That Looks Like in Practice.

Most shutter companies are good at selling. Fewer are good at being accountable after the invoice is paid.

This is not a critique made lightly. It is based on fifteen years of receiving calls from homeowners across Richmond, Kingston, Wimbledon, Esher, and dozens of postcodes in between, people with beautiful shutters that have developed a rattle, a stiff louvre, a panel that no longer closes flush, who have already tried calling whoever installed them and found no one willing to help.

We are Shutters Design. Colin has installed every shutter personally since 2009, working across South West London and Surrey from our base in Twickenham. No subcontractors. No crews. No handoff. If something needs fixing within five years of us fitting it, we come back at no charge.

This article tells you exactly what we do, how we do it, and what you can reasonably expect from each service. Read it, then call us.

Plantation Shutter Installation - Fitted Once, Fitted Correctly

The Three Things That Determine Whether Your Shutters Last

One: the survey. Colin uses a digital spirit level on every reveal before a single measurement is taken. A reveal that is two millimetres out of plumb will cause a shutter panel to bind within two years. We find this before it becomes your problem.

Two: the installation method. Face-fix, reveal-fit, or a hybrid, the choice depends on your window's architecture, not on which method is quickest on the day. The Victorian and Edwardian bay windows that define streets in Richmond, Twickenham, and Wimbledon each carry their own geometry, splay angles that vary house to house, reveals that are rarely perfectly square. Period sash windows in Kew, Putney, and St Margarets present a different challenge again. We design the panel configuration around your specific opening. Every time.

Three: the calibration. Every louvre across every tier is tested for consistent resistance before we leave. Every magnetic catch is set. Every hinge is checked under panel weight. This takes time. It is the difference between a shutter that operates smoothly in year five and one that starts causing problems in year two.

UK-Manufactured Hardwood and Polywood - Honest Advice on Which Is Right for You

We supply hardwood and Polycomposite shutters, both manufactured in the UK. Here is the honest version of the difference:

Hardwood is solid hardwood, warm, characterful, and visibly premium. It belongs in living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms. It does not belong in bathrooms or kitchens. Polycomposite is an engineered composite, dimensionally stable in moisture, and the correct choice for wet rooms without exception.

UK manufacturing matters for one practical reason: when a louvre needs replacing in three years, we source it domestically in days. With an overseas-made shutter, you wait weeks and hope the colour match is close.

Louvre sizes: 47mm, 63mm, 76mm, 89mm. Colin will tell you at survey which suits your window proportions — not which has the better margin.

Lead time: approximately three weeks from survey to installation day.

Remove and Refit - Taking Shutters Down and Putting Them Back Up Correctly

Why This Is Harder Than It Sounds

Renovation work is common across the older housing stock of South West London, kitchen extensions in Surbiton and Tolworth, full refurbishments in Cobham and Esher, window replacements in the period properties of East Twickenham and Ham. When building work is underway, shutters need to come off. They also need to go back on aligned, calibrated, and functioning identically to before.

Most shutter companies do not offer this service. Their installers are project-based. Once the installation invoice is paid, the relationship ends. When you call about a refit, you discover no one at the company has any record of your specific window.

What We Actually Do

Colin removes every panel and frame in sequence, labels every component, wraps panels for protection, and leaves your window clean and ready for your trades. He already knows your installation, the fixing positions, the reveal dimensions, any quirks, because he did it himself.

On return, the frame is re-levelled from scratch. Building work shifts reveals. Even a few millimetres of movement requires full realignment before the panels are rehung. Shortcuts here create problems that reveal themselves six months later.

We also refit shutters installed by other companies. The assessment at the start of the visit establishes the fixing method and any non-standard components before work begins.

Broken Louvre Replacement - Fix the Component, Not the Whole Panel

What Is Actually Broken and What It Costs to Fix

A cracked louvre, a snapped staple end, a disconnected tilt rod, these are component failures, not panel failures. In almost every case, the panel itself is structurally sound. Replacing the entire panel is unnecessary and expensive.

What Colin does: the damaged louvre is removed, a matching replacement sourced from our UK supplier (typically within days for standard finishes), fitted, and checked for consistent action with the rest of the panel.

The detail that matters: aged shutters in painted finishes develop a patina. A new louvre in the same base colour will be marginally brighter. Colin assesses this before ordering, not after. If the match is imperfect, you know before anything is fitted.

Tilt Rod Disconnection - It Looks Catastrophic. It Is Not.

When a tilt rod disconnects or snaps, every louvre on that panel moves independently. It looks like the panel is finished. It is not. The rod is replaced, the staple connections reset, and the panel operates normally. Most tilt rod repairs are completed in a single visit.

Wooden Plantation Shutter Maintenance - Timber Responds to Attention

What Goes Wrong With Wooden Shutters Over Time (and What Does Not)

Timber expands and contracts with humidity and temperature. After three to five years of daily use across seasonal cycles, wooden shutters accumulate specific, predictable issues. In south-facing rooms in Oxshott, Weybridge, and Thames Ditton, where light intensity and solar gain are higher, this process is accelerated. The symptoms are consistent regardless of where the shutters are:

  • Louvres stiffen. Paint accumulates at the staple point, or timber expansion increases resistance. Fix: staple clearance adjustment, tilt rod tension recalibration.

  • Panels sag. Hinge pins wear fractionally under panel weight over time. Fix: hinge re-tensioning or replacement.

  • Magnetic catches misalign. Fix: repositioning the catch body, resetting retention force.

  • Tilt rods bow. Fix: replacement, typically on the same visit as the assessment.

None of these mean your shutters are finished. They mean your shutters are timber, and timber responds to professional attention.

What a Maintenance Visit Covers

Every panel. Every louvre tested individually for consistent resistance. Every hinge checked under load. Every catch tested for retention. Every tilt rod inspected for bow and connection integrity. Frame corners and fixing points inspected for movement.

This is mechanical recalibration, not a cleaning visit. A maintenance visit every two to three years keeps wooden shutters performing correctly for ten years or more.

Polywood shutters need less mechanical attention, no seasonal timber movement, but hinges, catches, and tilt rod connections still benefit from inspection after several years of regular use.

Tracking Shutter Repair and Adjustment, Precision That Degrades Quietly

What Causes Tracking Shutters to Stop Working Properly

Tracking shutters slide on a top and bottom track. The mechanism is precise. Three things cause it to deteriorate:

Track contamination. Dust and household residue accumulate in the channel and create friction. The panel drags.

Track level drift. Buildings settle. A track that was perfectly level at installation can shift slightly, creating friction at one end of travel.

Runner wear. The top runner carries the panel's weight. Worn runners produce a characteristic rattle and reduce panel control.

Tracking shutters are increasingly common in the open-plan ground floors and kitchen extensions of homes in Kingston, New Malden, Raynes Park, and across the Surrey commuter belt, precisely because they handle wide openings that hinged shutters cannot span without a mid-point post.

What the Calibration Visit Involves

Track cleaned and inspected. Level checked across the full width. Panels removed, runner mechanisms inspected, re-tensioned or replaced. Panels rehung. Closure alignment confirmed, meaning panels meet flush at centre, louvres align horizontally across adjacent panels, and catches engage cleanly.

That last detail, cross-panel louvre alignment, is what distinguishes a calibrated tracking shutter from one that merely slides.

Patio Door Shutters - Large Panels, Specific Requirements

Why Patio Door Shutters Fail When Poorly Installed

Patio door shutter panels are heavier than window panels. Hinges specified for standard window installations will sag under this weight within twelve to eighteen months. In the extended homes and garden-facing reception rooms common across Esher, Cobham, East Molesey, and Long Ditton, patio door shutters are often the most prominent feature in the property and the most consequential if installed incorrectly.

We regularly receive calls from homeowners whose patio door shutters, installed by other companies, have started to drag, sag, or fail to close flush. In every case, the cause is hinge underspecification or a frame that was not fixed for the actual panel load.

How We Design and Install Patio Door Shutters

The survey assesses the door mechanism first, French, sliding, or bifold and designs the shutter panel configuration around it. Handle clearance and swing arc are confirmed before any frame position is fixed. Hinges are specified for the actual panel weight. Fixings are selected for the substrate.

For bifold patio door shutters, hinge alignment across every panel requires precise calibration so the shutters fold in a single smooth movement without binding at any point in travel.

10 Years of Free Aftercare - Without the Small Print

Five years. Any fault arising from our workmanship or from the shutters we supplied. No call-out fee. No labour charge. No parts charge.

What is covered: a frame that shifts because of how it was fixed, we correct it. A hinge set at incorrect tension, we rectify it. A louvre that snaps under normal use, we replace it. A panel that falls out of alignment for any reason within our control, we realign it.

What is not covered: accidental damage, misuse, and damage caused by building works or external events. We are direct about this because vagueness on exclusions is how aftercare guarantees lose their meaning.

There is no claims process. You contact Colin by phone, WhatsApp, or email. He schedules the visit, comes, and fixes it. The business has operated this way since 2009 because it is the only approach that makes accountability real.

Where We Work - South West London and Surrey

South West London and its Surrey border is what we know. Not as a list of postcodes to cover, but as a territory of housing types, installation challenges, and client relationships built over fifteen years.

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Richmond, Twickenham, St Margarets, and East Twickenham present consistently: deep window reveals, bay windows that need careful geometry work, sash windows that require a reveal-fit approach. These are the installations where a two-millimetre error at survey compounds into a binding panel two winters later.

The period houses of Wimbledon Village, Wimbledon, Southfields, and Putney share similar stock, plus the large sash windows on principal-floor reception rooms that reward the 89mm louvre fitted with proper clearance.

The converted and extended homes of Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Tolworth, and Chessington increasingly feature open-plan ground floors, wide openings that tracking shutters serve better than hinged panels.

The smaller terraces and semi-detached properties of Teddington, Hampton, Balham, Earlsfield, Tooting, and Raynes Park are where Polywood earns its place, bathroom and kitchen installations where hardwood would create long-term problems regardless of how well it was fitted.

The larger detached and executive homes of Esher, Cobham, Oxshott, Weybridge, Thames Ditton, East Molesey, Long Ditton, Claygate, and Epsom carry patio door shutters and full-house installations where every detail of calibration and finish is visible and matters.

We cover Kingston, Richmond, Wimbledon, Twickenham, Molesey, Esher, Teddington, Hampton, Kew, Putney, Ham, Whitton, Wandsworth with the same personal approach, Colin surveys, Colin fits, Colin returns if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Business

Q: Who are Shutters Design? A family shutter business based in Twickenham, operating since 2009. Colin surveys, supplies, and installs every job personally across South West London and Surrey. No subcontractors at any stage.

Q: Why does it matter that there are no subcontractors? The person who measures your window is the person who fits your shutters and the person who returns if anything needs attention. No handoff. No third party to disagree with about whose fault a problem is. Accountability is direct and personal.

Q: Are your shutters manufactured in the UK? Yes. Both hardwood and Polywood ranges are UK-manufactured. Components are consistently available for repairs and replacements without international lead times.

Q: How do your prices compare to national chains? Our clients typically save around £500 on equivalent installations. Lower overheads, no franchise structure, no national advertising budget, translate directly into better pricing without compromising on shutters or installation quality.

Q: What is your typical lead time? Approximately three weeks from survey to installation day.

Q: What areas do you cover? South West London and Surrey — Richmond, Twickenham, Teddington, Hampton, Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Wimbledon, Putney, Esher, Cobham, Weybridge, Thames Ditton, and surrounding areas. Contact us to confirm your postcode.

About Installation

Q: What happens during the survey? Colin visits, measures every window with digital precision, checks reveals for plumb and level, assesses the correct installation method for your window type, and discusses material, louvre size, and finish. Fixed price confirmed at survey. No surprises after.

Q: Which louvre size should I choose? 47mm for smaller, traditional windows. 63mm and 76mm for standard residential windows — the most common range across South West London's Victorian and Edwardian stock. 89mm for larger windows and contemporary settings. Colin gives a specific recommendation at survey based on your window.

Q: Can you install shutters in bay windows? Yes. Bay windows are extremely common in Richmond, Twickenham, Wimbledon, and Putney. The panel configuration is designed around your bay's specific geometry and splay angles — not adapted from a standard flat-window approach.

Q: What is the difference between hardwood and Polywood? Hardwood is solid timber — warm and premium, suited to living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms. Polywood is moisture-resistant composite, correct for bathrooms, kitchens, and any high-humidity environment. Both available across the full louvre size and finish range.

Q: Do you fit shutters to sash windows? Yes. Sash windows are common in Kew, St Margarets, Putney, and Wimbledon Village. The installation approach preserves full sash operation while fitting the shutter correctly into the reveal.

Q: Do you offer full-height and tier-on-tier shutters? Yes. Full-height covers the entire window in one configuration. Tier-on-tier divides into two independently operated sections — useful for managing privacy in the lower half while keeping the upper half open for light.

About Remove and Refit

Q: Why would I need my shutters removed? Decoration — painting or wallpapering behind the frame. Window replacement. Building work requiring access to the reveal or wall. Renovation. All common across the Surrey properties and South West London period homes we serve.

Q: Will removing my shutters damage them? When removed correctly, no. Colin removes every panel and frame methodically, labels all components, wraps panels for protection. They return in the same condition they left.

Q: Can you refit shutters after new windows have been installed? In most cases, yes. The new reveal dimensions are assessed on arrival. Where compatible with the existing frame, shutters are refitted directly. Where the reveal has changed significantly, a new frame may be required — confirmed with a clear cost indication before any work begins.

Q: Can you refit shutters installed by another company? Yes. The assessment at the start of the visit establishes the fixing method and any non-standard components. We have refitted shutters from most major suppliers operating in this area.

Q: How long does a remove and refit take? A single window: approximately half a day including recalibration. Multiple rooms: a full day or more. Colin gives a specific time estimate when you book.

About Broken Louvres

Q: One louvre is cracked. Do I need to replace the entire panel? No. A broken louvre is a component replacement, not a panel replacement. The louvre is removed, a matching replacement sourced and fitted. The panel frame and all other louvres are unaffected.

Q: Will the replacement louvre match my existing shutters? For shutters in standard colours and recently fitted, the match is very close. Older shutters in painted finishes may have developed a patina that makes an exact match more difficult. Colin assesses this before ordering the part and is direct with you about the expected result.

Q: My louvre snapped at the staple end, not across the face. Is that different? Staple-end breaks are actually more common than face cracks. The louvre end and the staple may both need replacement. Still a component repair — no panel replacement required.

Q: All the louvres on one panel now move independently. What happened? The tilt rod has disconnected or broken. The rod links all louvres in a panel; when it fails, each louvre reverts to individual movement. Tilt rod replaced, staple connections reset — typically completed in a single visit.

Q: How quickly can you do a louvre repair? For UK-manufactured shutters in standard specifications, parts are available within a few days. Most louvre repairs are completed within a week of first contact.

About Wooden Shutter Maintenance

Q: How often do wooden plantation shutters need professional maintenance? Every two to three years for standard residential use. South-facing rooms in Oxshott, Weybridge, Thames Ditton, and similar Surrey locations, where solar gain is higher — benefit from more frequent attention. If you notice stiffness, sag, or noise before that interval, contact us early. Early maintenance prevents component wear.

Q: My louvres have become stiff. Can this be fixed without replacing anything? In most cases, yes. Stiff louvres are caused by paint accumulation at the staple point, timber expansion, or a tilt rod that has bowed slightly. All three are addressable during a maintenance visit without replacing components in the majority of cases.

Q: One panel is hanging lower than it was. What has happened? Panel sag is almost always a hinge tension issue. As the hinge pin wears fractionally under panel weight over time, the panel drops. Hinge re-tensioning — or replacement where wear is significant — corrects this during a maintenance visit.

Q: Do you refinish or repaint wooden shutters? Minor touch-up — chips, small areas of wear — is addressed during a maintenance visit. A full professional refinish is a separate service. Where warranted, we quote for it separately.

Q: Do Polywood shutters need maintenance? Less mechanical attention than hardwood — no seasonal timber movement. However, hinges, magnetic catches, and tilt rod connections still benefit from inspection and recalibration after several years of regular use.

About Tracking Shutters

Q: My tracking shutters are getting harder to slide. What is causing this? The three most common causes: debris in the track channel, a track section that has shifted fractionally out of level, or a top runner that has worn and is no longer travelling smoothly. A service visit diagnoses which — or which combination — is responsible and resolves it.

Q: The panels on my tracking shutters no longer close flush. Can this be adjusted? Yes. Closure misalignment is a runner tension issue — the panel is hanging at a slightly different height or angle than at installation. Runner re-tensioning and closure alignment calibration correct this without new panels.

Q: My tracking shutters rattle in the wind. Is this a fault? Rattling is runner play or catch tension. The panels have developed enough movement in the track to respond to air pressure. Runner tension adjustment and catch recalibration typically eliminate the rattle in a single visit.

Q: Can tracking shutters be used as a room divider? Yes, and they are increasingly used this way in the open-plan ground floors common in Kingston, New Malden, and Surbiton. The track configuration is designed for the specific opening: head structure, floor condition, and panel stacking direction assessed before confirmation.

About Patio Door Shutters

Q: Will patio door shutters obstruct my door handle or door swing? No, when correctly designed. The panel configuration is planned around your door's handle position, swing arc, and opening mechanism before any frame is fixed. Clearance issues are raised at survey, not discovered on installation day.

Q: My patio door shutters are sagging and one panel drags on the floor. Can this be fixed? Yes. This is hinge underspecification, the original hinges were not rated for the panel weight. Re-hinging with appropriately rated components corrects the sag and the drag. We have carried out this repair on installations from several other companies operating in Esher, Cobham, and the wider Surrey area.

Q: Can I have bifold patio door shutters? Yes. Bifold patio shutters fold completely clear of the aperture when the door is in use. Hinge alignment across folding panels requires precise calibration — each panel must fold at exactly the correct angle. Colin calibrates this at installation.

Q: There are draughts around the frame of my patio door shutters. What is causing this? Most commonly: an inadequate or compressed seal between the shutter frame and the reveal. Colin inspects the frame perimeter during a service visit and advises on the correct remedial approach.

About Our 10-Year Aftercare Guarantee

Q: What does the five-year aftercare actually cover? Any fault arising from our workmanship or from a defect in the shutters we supplied, for ten full years from installation. Installation errors, component failures under normal daily use, alignment and calibration issues attributable to our work. No call-out fee, no labour charge, no parts charge.

Q: What is not covered? Accidental damage, misuse, and damage caused by building works or external events. Handled as paid repair visits, priced transparently. We do not use exclusions to avoid legitimate aftercare responsibilities.

Q: How do I make an aftercare claim? Contact Colin directly — phone, WhatsApp, or email. Describe the problem. He schedules the visit, comes, and fixes it. No form, no third-party administrator, no process designed to discourage you from calling.

Q: What backs the aftercare — insurance or a trade body? Colin's personal commitment and fifteen years of local reputation in South West London and Surrey. That reputation is the security. We have no interest in avoiding aftercare responsibilities — every resolved call reinforces the client relationship.

Q: What happens after five years? All services remain available as paid visits, quoted transparently before work begins. Many of our clients across Richmond, Kingston, Wimbledon, and Surrey have been calling back for maintenance, additional rooms, and adjustments for over a decade.

Q: Is the aftercare transferable if I sell the property? Contact us to discuss. Where the shutters remain in the property and the issue falls clearly within our original workmanship, we aim to be reasonable. We will be direct about what we can commit to in your specific situation.
